Power Almost Fully Restored in Puerto Rico After Island-Wide Blackout

Authorities reported that electricity was back on for over 98% of customers on Friday, following an island-wide blackout earlier in the week.

Luma Energy, the company in charge of power transmission and distribution in Puerto Rico, stated that more than 1.45 million customers had their power restored within 48 hours of the outage.

Luma cautioned that “some customers may continue to experience temporary outages due to limited generation.”

Gov. Jenniffer González stated that power had been restored to everyone affected by the blackout, and the 21,400+ customers without power on Friday were experiencing issues unrelated to the widespread outage.

“Obviously, Luma still has work to do,” she commented, adding, “It is a shame for our people … that we have such an insufficient, mediocre system.”

Typically, a few thousand customers in Puerto Rico experience temporary power outages each week for various reasons.

González also noted that more than 98% of customers had water service.

“We have overcome, thank God, a great crisis this week,” she stated.

Officials said the blackout, which began Wednesday afternoon, occurred after a failure triggered protective shutdowns of generators across the island. At the time, over 400,000 customers were also without water.

The cause of the failure is still unclear, but authorities are investigating potential causes, including a series of failed breakers or overgrown vegetation.

González said she anticipates receiving a preliminary report in the coming days.

This is the second major blackout to affect Puerto Rico in less than four months, the previous one occurring on New Year’s Eve.
