A skydiver escaped and ultimately survived after his reserve parachute deployed accidentally and got caught on the tail of an airplane while it was .
The Transport Safety Bureau stated that the “reserve handle caught on the aircraft’s flap, causing the reserve parachute to deploy.”
Video footage of the terrifying incident — which took place in September — shows the parachute deploying, the man slamming into the aircraft’s tail, and then hanging from the plane because the chute had become stuck.
“The reserve parachute wrapped around the left horizontal stabiliser and elevator and deflated when” the skydiver’s “lower legs hit the stabiliser,” the , noting that the person “was then suspended beneath the tailplane.”
The individual used a hook knife to cut the parachute lines.
“The reserve parachute then ripped, freeing” the person “from the aircraft with part of the reserve staying on the aircraft’s tail,” the ATSB report states.
After breaking free of the aircraft, the skydiver deployed the main parachute and landed — though not without some complications.
The ATSB report says that “during the main parachute deployment, the remaining reserve parachute lines twisted around the main parachute lines. Also, during the opening sequence, the main parachute’s right brake toggle came loose.”
“The main parachute fully inflated with twisted lines, and after initially turning right, it began a rapid left turn. After several spins,” the skydiver “grabbed and pulled the right brake line above the twisted lines to stop the turn. The parachute stopped rotating, and” the individual “unwound the line twists and released the left brake toggle. As they passed about 8,000 ft, the main parachute lines fully untwisted from the reserve parachute lines and worked normally for the rest of the descent.”
The pilot managed to land the , according to the ATSB, which noted that the skydiver “landed 9 seconds later with minor cuts and bruising on their left lower leg and a deep gash on their right lower leg.”
