According to Yonhap news agency, a plane veered off the runway at Muan County airport in South Jeolla Province, South Korea, impacting a perimeter fence. At least 23 passengers perished in the accident.
The news agency reported that malfunctioning landing gear caused the crash.
The Boeing 737-800, operated by South Korean budget airline Jeju Air, was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members. The incident occurred Sunday morning during landing at approximately 9:07 a.m. local time.
The aircraft had been traveling from Thailand.
Local media images depicted smoke emanating from the aircraft.
