Yoon Suk Yeol’s downfall is a cautionary tale of political miscalculation. His attempt to use drone flights to justify martial law was a desperate power – grab that backfired spectacularly.

Officially, the court sentenced Yoon to 30 years for ordering drone flights over North Korea. North Korea accused South Korea of dropping propaganda leaflets in October 2024. The Defense Ministry’s vague response added fuel to the fire. Yoon also faced life – imprisonment for leading an insurrection after declaring martial law in December 2024.

But the real geopolitical intention was Yoon’s bid for authoritarian control. He accused liberal lawmakers of siding with North Korea before the martial – law declaration. Prosecutors claim he tried to create a crisis with North Korea to remove political opponents. His martial – law attempt lasted just six hours, overturned by lawmakers amid public protests.

This verdict marks a major shift in South Korea’s political pendulum. The incident shows the perils of leaders using external threats for internal power consolidation.
