Teacher admits guilt in sexual abuse of 15-year-old student, weeks after childbirth: report

A teacher has admitted guilt in a New South Wales court to multiple instances of sexually abusing a teenage boy near Newcastle, according to reports.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) disclosed that Karly Rae, 37, who recently gave birth nearly eight weeks ago, confessed to charges including engaging in sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old boy in October 2024, grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity, and committing an act with the intent to pervert the course of justice.

Rae initially denied the accusations in May but altered her pleas last month.

Her attorney, Mark Ramsland, reportedly urged the courts to prioritize her case because she appeared in court with her eight-week-old baby.

Court records obtained by the broadcaster allegedly indicate that Rae and the 15-year-old communicated via social media, and the alleged offenses took place in the suburbs of Bolton Point, Merewether, and Belmont.

Police evidence submitted to the court featured messages exchanged between Rae and the teenager on platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram.

“Hey, apologies for deleting you on Snap,” Rae reportedly messaged the teenager. “I found it too enticing for the moment.”

A few messages later, the boy inquired of Rae, “Perhaps we should unfriend each other now?”

“It’s my responsibility,” she replied. “I accept complete accountability. Do as you deem necessary.”

In a subsequent message reported by the station, Rae proposed to the boy that they meet a final time.

“Perhaps we could have one final meeting before school resumes,” she reportedly penned. “I’ll bring my item.”

The teenager’s cousin purportedly discovered the Instagram messages between them, informed his parents, who then reported the incident to the police, according to the station.

Upon Rae’s arrest, court documents allege she informed law enforcement that she was unaware of the teenager’s actual age.

“I believed he was old enough… and finishing school,” she reportedly stated.

According to ABC, in June, subsequent to her informing the court of her pregnancy, despite a prior application having been declined.

Her trial had been set for August 2025, but those dates have subsequently been canceled.

Two and a half hours have been allotted for a sentencing hearing scheduled for March 25, with an order for a sentencing assessment report to be prepared beforehand.

Ramsland indicated that “considerable subjective material” would be part of the submissions.

Police findings referenced by ABC highlighted that Rae’s professional learning transcript from the NSW Department of Education “showed she had completed child protection training in February 2024.”

She is currently out on bail, awaiting her sentencing.
