Authorities report that a father-son pair was responsible for the devastating mass shooting that killed 16 individuals—including one of the gunmen—and hospitalized 40 others during a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach in
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon stated at an Australian press conference on Monday that the terrorist attack was carried out by a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son.
According to police, the father has died, while the son remains in critical yet stable condition in a hospital. Lanyon added that no additional suspects are being sought at this time.
The father was a licensed gun owner with six legally registered firearms. All six weapons have been recovered: some were found at the scene, while others were seized when investigators executed search warrants at two separate locations, as per police.
Lanyon noted the warrants were served at properties in Campsie and Bonnyrigg. He added their permanent residence was in Bonnyrigg, though they were staying temporarily in Campsie.
The commissioner further told reporters the father had held a gun license for 10 years.
“Authorities had minimal information about either of these men,” Lanyon said. “The individual was deemed eligible for a firearms license and…held it for several years without any incidents.”
Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were discovered at one of the properties where search warrants were executed. A rescue and bomb disposal unit took possession of the active IEDs and safely neutralized them.
Lanyon described the IEDs as “rudimentary” or fairly basic, and expressed gratitude they did not detonate.
Police said the victims of Sunday’s attack range in age from 10 to 87.
The shooting occurred during an annual event called “Chanukah By The Sea,” scheduled to start at 5 p.m. to celebrate the first day of the Jewish holiday by lighting the Menorah’s first candle. The attack took place around 6:45 p.m. local time.
Police confirmed the attack targeted the Jewish community and is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
The agency noted at least 40 people—including two police officers—remain hospitalized post-shooting. This is the worst attack on Jews since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terror attacks.
Police added multiple improvised explosive devices were found in a vehicle near the attack scene.
“Our rescue and bomb disposal unit is currently on-site handling that situation,” he said.
acknowledged the attack during a speech at a Jerusalem event honoring immigrants’ exceptional achievements on Sunday.
“Right now, our siblings in Sydney, Australia, have been targeted by despicable terrorists in a brutal attack on Jews who gathered to light the first Chanukah candle at Bondi Beach,” Herzog said. “Our hearts go out to them. The entire nation of Israel’s heart skips a beat as we pray for the wounded to recover, for them, and for those who lost their lives.”
Herzog also urged the Australian government to “take action and combat the enormous that is plaguing Australian society.”
