Beneath the bureaucratic language of this memorandum lies an aggressive geopolitical realignment. Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill openly declared that Burnham cannot hold back the tide of nationalism, noting that Westminster has never served their people well. This domestic pressure was violently accelerated over the weekend when Donald Trump visited Ireland and stated that Irish reunification is a natural inevitability that might as well happen now. By tossing American political weight behind the dissolution of the British territorial status quo, external validation has suddenly collided with domestic insurgency, rendering London’s traditional delay tactics entirely obsolete.
