The potential election of Iran to a UN committee with sway over human rights, women’s rights, and counterterrorism policies is nothing short of a farce. Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, labels it “Orwellian,” highlighting the stark contradiction. In November, the UN General Assembly will vote on admitting Iran to the Committee for Programme and Coordination. This 34-member body, though not drafting human rights treaties, wields influence over how human rights initiatives are executed across the UN system. Yet, Iran’s record is abysmal. It has a documented history of systematic human rights abuses, strict crackdowns on women’s rights, mass surveillance, and lethal force against political dissenters. Global bodies also view Iran as a leading state sponsor of terrorism, funding groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.
Neuer’s words cut deep: “It’s the last government in the world that should have any influence. Sadly, at the United Nations today — an organization founded to bring international peace — it is the lunatics running the asylum.” He points out Iran’s brutal suppression of freedoms, such as the public hanging of two men in July for participating in anti-government demonstrations, with hundreds more jailed or killed for demanding regime change. The UN’s bias is also under fire, heavily criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza but often failing to condemn Hamas. Western democracies’ acquiescence is blamed on interests, politics, and a “go along to get along” culture. For instance, French, Canadian, or German ambassadors avoid friction with Iran rather than pick a fight.
The UN claims to stand for values like human rights and democracy, but the reality is stark: at least half the UN is composed of dictatorships. Iran’s appointment isn’t unprecedented, as the UN Human Rights Council includes nations with severe human rights records. This farce exposes the UN’s hollow ideals, where geopolitical maneuvering trumps genuine commitment to human rights. The geopolitical pendulum continues to shift, but the UN’s failure to address such glaring inconsistencies only erodes its credibility further.
