The Vatican reported that Pope Francis, 88, spent a peaceful night and was resting on Thursday morning, noting further slight improvement in his condition as he continues to battle double pneumonia.
Francis has been at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for almost two weeks due to the illness. According to officials, he was in good spirits, ate breakfast, and continued his therapy on Thursday morning.
“The Pope slept well last night and is now resting,” the Vatican stated briefly. Further medical test results were anticipated later on Thursday.
Late Wednesday, the Vatican issued a statement indicating that the kidney insufficiency detected in recent days had diminished, blood tests revealed a slight improvement, and a chest CT scan showed the complex lung infection was progressing as expected under treatment.
The Vatican also mentioned that the Pope, who had a portion of one lung removed when he was younger, remains on “high-flow oxygen therapy” but has not experienced any further respiratory distress since Saturday.
Despite the “slight improvement” in Francis’ health, the Vatican cautioned that his “prognosis remains reserved.”
Francis was hospitalized on February 14 after his bronchitis worsened over a week. Doctors initially diagnosed the respiratory tract infection, involving bacterial and fungal elements, and later diagnosed pneumonia in both lungs.
Thursday marked Pope Francis’ 13th day in the hospital, surpassing his longest previous hospitalization. He stayed at Gemelli Hospital for 10 days in 2021 following the removal of 13 inches of his colon.
