A tourist captured the alarming moment an avalanche tore down a mountainside and slammed into a train traversing the Swiss Alps.
This dramatic event took place on February 17 near Zermatt, a well-known ski resort town in the Valais canton of southern Switzerland.
According to Storyful, Kirsten Osborne, an Australian woman residing in the U.K., was aboard the train with fellow passengers when the avalanche suddenly hit.
She recorded the shocking scene as a massive snow wall hurtled down the mountain toward the train.
In the footage, a child is heard exclaiming “uh-oh!” multiple times as the expanding wave of powdery snow quickly nears.
Within seconds, the train is swallowed by a dense white cloud as the avalanche collides with it, coating the windows in snow and making the train shake.
Osborne recounted how passengers were left stranded following the impact.
“We were stuck for two hours before rescue arrived, and we were then transported to safety by bus,” she said.
No injuries were reported despite the terrifying circumstances.
Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, the railway company operating the route, has since confirmed that all passengers were safely evacuated in collaboration with emergency services.
“At approximately 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning, another avalanche occurred between Täsch and Randa,” the company said in a statement.
“A regional MGBahn train was hit by a subsequent powder-snow avalanche. No injuries were sustained. Passengers were evacuated with the assistance of emergency services.
“As a precautionary measure, and after consulting with external local natural hazard experts, MGBahn has decided to suspend operations on the St. Niklaus–Täsch route until further notice,” the company said.
MGBahn also confirmed it is in “close contact with specialists and experts to evaluate the situation across the entire route network between Disentis (GR) and Zermatt (VS).”
The incident occurred amid hazardous winter conditions in the Swiss Alps, where heavy snowfall has affected the tourist season.
The avalanche hitting the train occurred just a day after another rail incident near Goppenstein, where a train derailed, injuring five individuals.
Local reports suggested that an avalanche could have been a potential cause of that derailment, though investigations are still underway.
