Las Vegas Saw a 17% Decline in Canadian Tourists Last Year

(AsiaGameHub) –   According to a report on international visitors published by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), travel from Canada to Las Vegas declined by 17.4% last year.

LVCVA Releases Visitor Numbers Report

A total of 1.19 million Canadians visited Las Vegas in 2025, down from 1.44 million in 2024. Following Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands saw the next-largest drops, each at nearly 14%. The resort industry attributes part of the overall decline in Las Vegas tourism—which fell by almost 8% in 2025—to the decrease in Canadian visitors.

This follows a broader trend in the U.S., where the country experienced a significant drop in visitor numbers last year, according to data from the National Travel and Tourism Office.

Despite the decline, Canadians still represented the largest group of international visitors to Las Vegas. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, annual Canadian visitation typically ranged between 1.4 million and 1.8 million, based on data dating back to 2010.

Scottish casino consultant Oliver Lovat observed that the drop in Canadian travel was not surprising, though he did not attribute it solely to geopolitical factors. He suggested that much of the decline is likely due to macroeconomic conditions rather than politics, noting that the weaker Canadian dollar has made trips to Las Vegas more expensive.

Interestingly, Mexico ranked as the second-largest source of visitors to Las Vegas, per LVCVA data. With just over 1.18 million travelers in 2025, Mexican tourist numbers actually rose by 1.0% compared to 2024. Officials at the LVCVA described Mexican travel as resilient. During the pandemic, visitors from Mexico surpassed those from Canada for three consecutive years (2020–2022). Additionally, Mexican visitation has exceeded pre-pandemic levels, increasing 6.0% in 2025 relative to 2019.

Reasons Behind Fewer Canadians Visiting Las Vegas

Analysts have sought explanations for the sharp decline in tourists from Canada last year, but no single cause appears definitive. Some point to the significant price increases Las Vegas experienced in 2025. Others highlight the collapse of low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines, which eliminated an affordable transportation option for many potential Canadian tourists.

There is also a political dimension to the situation. In March of last year, Las Vegas initially recorded a steep decline in tourists from Canada, following President Trump’s imposition of new tariffs against the country.

Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly made statements toward Canada that many Canadians may find offensive, further deterring them from traveling to Las Vegas. His remarks have included harsh criticism of Canada’s internal politics and suggestions that the U.S. should annex its northern neighbor.

These tensions appear to have alienated many Canadians; an Abacus poll found that 33% would criticize friends or family who travel to the U.S. Meanwhile, in related gambling news, Kambi, a leading sports betting solutions provider, has recently been selected as the official sportsbook supplier in Canada.
