(AsiaGameHub) – Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board enforcement agents announced they have shut down an illegal gambling operation at the Independent Political Club, situated at 300 E. Prospect Avenue in Washington, Pennsylvania.
Social Club Raided Amid Suspicions of Illegal Gambling
Per an official police report, authorities received a tip regarding suspected gambling activity at the club, prompting the Liquor Control Board to conduct a search on May 12. The search uncovered more than $91,000 in cash and a “Queen of Hearts” game board, an unlicensed game of chance prohibited under Pennsylvania state law.
Pennsylvania Liquor Control enforcement officer Wayne Wright detailed that the game involves laying out all 52 playing cards on a table, with participants buying chances to select a card. He shared that the individual who picks the Queen of Hearts will claim the jackpot. Law enforcement officials stated these games can run for extended stretches of time, and Wright confirmed the specific game being investigated had been operating for roughly 10 months.
The Independent Political Club, a registered nonprofit categorized as a 501(c)(7) organization, did not hold a valid small games of chance license. Officials noted that even if the club had obtained such a license, the Queen of Hearts game would not meet the criteria of Pennsylvania’s small games of chance regulations. In Pennsylvania, small games of chance licenses are granted at the county level and are restricted to qualifying charities, nonprofit groups, and fraternal organizations.
No arrests were made during the raid. Rocco Gagliardi, a spokesperson for State Police Troop B, credited the “strong collaborative partnership” between Pennsylvania State Police departments for the success of the enforcement inquiry.
While $91,000 is a considerable sum of money, it is only a tiny fraction of the $5.9 trillion the global unregulated gambling industry handles annually. If this industry were an independent nation, it would have the third-largest economy worldwide.
The Club Promoted Its Game Online
Notably, the Independent Political Club publicly promoted its Queen of Hearts game, frequently sharing updates and photos of the game’s setup on its public Facebook page. Shortly after the raid, the organization removed all images related to the Queen of Hearts game from its account. Per its past Facebook posts, the club also hosted bingo nights and offered unregulated skill games similar to slot machines.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that criminal charges against the club’s owners remain pending. In Pennsylvania, illegal gambling offenses are typically categorized as first-degree misdemeanors, which can carry penalties of up to five years in prison and fines of up to $10,000. Officials noted that prosecutors may file felony charges for cases involving large-scale organized gambling, though this is not expected to happen in this specific situation, according to police.
In other recent illegal gambling news, Florida police confiscated 265 illegal gambling devices and more than $120,000 in cash during an operation dubbed “Silent Spin” last week.
