(SeaPRwire) – Local Officials Emphasize Risks of Distracted, Impaired, and Unsafe Driving
ATLANTA, April 3, 2026 — The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the Lutzie 43 Foundation are collaborating to present a Safe Driving Summit for students at Prattville High School on April 8, 2026. This event seeks to inform area high schoolers about the vital necessity of adopting secure driving habits.
Dalton Middleton, Drive Safe Alabama coordinator for ALDOT, stated, “The Safe Driving Summit, a joint effort by ALDOT and the Lutzie 43 Foundation, provides essential resources to protect young motorists across Alabama.” He added, “In 2024, almost 10 percent of all collisions in Alabama involved drivers between 15 and 19 years old.”
The Safe Driving Summit at Prattville High School will include a keynote speech by Mike Lutzenkirchen, Executive Director of the Lutzie 43 Foundation. He will recount the poignant story of his son, Philip Lutzenkirchen, a former Auburn University football star who tragically passed away in 2014 following a crash attributed to distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving.
Students will engage in interactive breakout sessions facilitated by first responders, trauma care experts, law enforcement personnel, and trucking industry representatives. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to enter a large commercial truck, gaining insight into a truck driver’s viewpoint, including blind spots, braking distances, and the difficulties professional drivers encounter.
Lutzenkirchen commented, “Our collaboration with ALDOT to deliver this Safe Driving Summit to Prattville High School students is vital to our objective of fostering safer driving behaviors among young motorists nationwide, thereby preventing distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving incidents.” He added, “This gathering unites the community to equip and enable students with the necessary information and resources, such as the 43 Key Seconds Safe Driving Initiative, to make critical, life-preserving choices when driving.”
Upon the event’s conclusion, every student will be given a physical 43 Key. This serves as a concrete prompt to dedicate 43 seconds before each journey to secure their mobile device, fasten their seatbelt, minimize distractions, and commit to responsible driving practices.
Principal Daniel Farris remarked, “Upon learning about the Safe Driving Summit from Mike Lutzenkirchen, I instantly recognized it as an invaluable opportunity we had to seize.” He continued, “By hosting the Summit at Prattville High School just three days before our prom on Saturday, April 11, we can emphasize this crucial, life-saving message at a particularly impactful moment. Should this experience lead even one student to pause, reflect, and choose a safer path, ultimately affecting a single life, it will have been profoundly worthwhile.”
The Safe Driving Summit is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Prattville High School, located at 1315 Upper Kingston Road, Prattville, AL 36067.
