For almost five decades, Atelier Seiran has operated from Tokushima, a premier region for indigo production in Japan, where it has developed a unique artistic practice focused on Awa Ai (Awa indigo). Established in 1970 by artist Yoko Hashimoto, the Atelier was founded during a period when synthetic dyes were endangering traditional craft methods. By creating a distinctive wax-resist technique, Atelier Seiran has transformed indigo dyeing into a modern artistic medium that moves beyond conventional craft limits.

The Palazzo Dona dalle Rose exhibition investigates the creative possibilities within cultural and historical “fissures.” Correspondingly, Atelier Seiran’s presentation, “The Root of Life,” addresses this idea, summoning a primeval world where nature, time, and life intersect through the profound blue hues of Awa Ai.

A key feature of the display is a collaborative exhibition with Cameroonian artist Serge Mouangue. This partnership examines common cultural expressions of life and energy, initiating a conversation between Cameroonian symbolic traditions and the cyclical, nature-oriented philosophy inherent in Awa Ai.

The featured artists are Yoko Hashimoto, Hatsuko Ukigawa, and Kiyoko Hashimoto. Their internationally exhibited works, shown at venues like Le Salon in Paris, connect tradition with innovation in both art and technology.
