Battery Metals Trading on CME Group Reaches Record Highs in Volume and Open Interest

CHICAGO, June 2, 2025 – CME Group, a leading global derivatives marketplace, reported unprecedented trading volumes and open interest in its battery metals suite. On May 29, a new high of 2,587 contracts was achieved across battery metals futures and options, exceeding the previous high of 2,301 contracts from February 11, 2025. Total open interest also peaked at 64,387 contracts.

According to Jin Hennig, Managing Director and Global Head of Metals at CME Group, the company is now the preferred platform for managing worldwide battery metals risk. The record numbers were fueled by the Lithium Hydroxide and Cobalt Metal futures contracts, both of which surpassed 1,000 contracts traded in a single day for the first time. Hennig added that the company is witnessing considerable growth among commercial users, which is attracting a wider array of participants and further improving price discovery within these crucial markets.

CME Group provides market participants with the most comprehensive selection of battery metals products. Notably, all 10 of the highest volume days across the complex have occurred this year, with the average daily volume reaching 837 contracts year-to-date, a 100% increase from the previous year.
