(SeaPRwire) –   VANCOUVER, BC, March 31, 2026 – An excessive number of Canadians are struggling to find housing that fits their budget. Addressing Canada’s housing crisis requires immediate action to lower costs, cut bureaucratic red tape, and speed up home construction. The Government of Canada is stepping forward with a bold new strategy to build affordable housing across the country.

At the core of this work, the Government of Canada has launched Build Canada Homes, which is helping to increase the pace of affordable homebuilding. This initiative also supports the fight against homelessness by constructing transitional and supportive housing—working alongside provinces, territories, municipalities, and Indigenous communities. It builds deeply affordable and community-focused housing for low-income households, and partners with private market developers to create affordable homes for Canada’s middle class.

As part of the federal government’s broader efforts to tackle the housing crisis, investments are being made across the entire housing continuum to address the needs of communities nationwide.

Today, the federal government announced $1 million in funding through the Canada Greener Affordable Housing Fund to retrofit 10 homes in Waiwakum 14, in collaboration with the Hiy̓ám̓ ta Housing Society.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada.

The Government of Canada’s housing investments will help strengthen Canadian supply chains and create good jobs at every stage of the homebuilding process—supporting both increased home construction and a more robust Canadian economy.

    • CGAH offered contributions for pre-retrofit activities like planning, preparation, and applying for retrofit funding, as well as forgivable and low-interest loans to finance building retrofits and climate-focused actions.
