HOUSTON, March 15, 2025 — With the conclusion of the National Weather Service’s Red Flag Warning and the subsiding threat of fire weather and high winds in the Greater Houston area, CenterPoint Energy is resuming standard operations. In anticipation of potentially hazardous weather conditions, CenterPoint undertook proactive measures over the past several days. These included pre-inspections of electrical and natural gas systems, adjustments to power line safety protocols in higher-risk zones, communication with its customer base, and collaboration with local emergency response teams.

Key Actions Taken to Ensure Customer Safety
In preparation for the Red Flag Warning issued today, CenterPoint implemented the following key safety measures:

  • Examined and Strengthened Vital Power Lines: Inspected power lines located in areas at increased risk of fire, removed potentially dangerous vegetation in proximity to power lines, and performed necessary repairs in advance of possible severe weather.
  • Examined Natural Gas Infrastructure: Inspected gas infrastructure in areas at increased risk of fire and removed potentially dangerous vegetation in proximity to facilities in advance of possible severe weather.
  • Modified Safety Protocols: Modified the operational settings on select power lines for safety purposes from noon to 9 p.m. today.
  • Increased Crew Availability for Response: Strategically positioned CenterPoint crews and additional contractors to be ready to address any power outages or interruptions to natural gas service that might occur.
  • Coordinated Efforts with Local Emergency Management: Shared information proactively with state, county, and local officials.
  • Communicated with Customers: Proactively contacted roughly 330,000 customers residing in the Cypress, Fort Bend, and Katy areas via phone, text, or email, informing them about the possibility of brief, safety-related power interruptions due to the elevated risk of fire.

“We want to express our appreciation to our customers for their understanding, particularly those who might have experienced brief power interruptions today. These precautions were essential to safeguard the community and our electrical grid from the dangers posed by the fire weather conditions,” stated Tony Gardner, Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer. “Although the immediate weather threat has diminished, we urge customers to take advantage of the company’s Power Alert Service® and confirm their contact details. This will enable CenterPoint to provide timely and relevant updates regarding their electrical service should future weather events affect the Greater Houston area.”

CenterPoint’s electricity customers are encouraged to subscribe to the company’s Power Alert Service to receive outage details, estimated restoration times, and customer-specific restoration updates via phone call, text, or email.

Customers can also follow CenterPoint Energy on social media to receive the most current information regarding the company’s operations in the Greater Houston area and throughout Texas.
