CAMBRIDGE, England, March 15, 2025 — A presentation of “A Comprehensive Collection of Song Dynasty Paintings,” a component of Zhejiang University’s “A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings,” was successfully hosted at the Needham Research Institute and Cavonius Centre in Cambridge, UK. Organized by the China Intercontinental Communication Center, the event attracted numerous prominent figures from Chinese and British cultural, academic, and publishing sectors.
“A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings” is a national cultural project in China, collaboratively compiled and published by Zhejiang University and the Zhejiang Provincial Administration of Cultural Heritage. The Song Dynasty volume, a key publication featuring artistic masterpieces of the era, showcases a wide range of valuable works encompassing various genres such as landscape, flower-and-bird, and figure paintings.
Attendees explored a specially arranged display of Song Dynasty paintings from the Collection. Guests also had the chance to experience Zhejiang’s intangible cultural heritage, contemporary Chinese design, and advanced digital visualization technologies. Representatives from the University of Cambridge conveyed their sincere appreciation for the Chinese delegation’s generous donation, emphasizing that the book series would significantly enhance the university’s research capabilities and promote cultural exchange. This contribution will broaden the artistic perspectives of researchers and students, encourage cross-cultural understanding, and strengthen Sino-British collaboration in the cultural field.

The exhibition, entitled “Where Cam Meets Canvas: A Thousand Years of Song Dynasty Paintings,” was organized around thematic categories such as *The Living World under Brushstrokes*, *Rivers of Civilization*, and *Paintings as Witnesses to History*. It presented high-definition color proofs from the Collection, allowing visitors to closely examine the delicate artistry of Song Dynasty paintings. A central display of *A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains*, enhanced with vibrant cyan-green design elements, created an engaging artistic experience. Furthermore, a documentary titled *The Journey*, with English narration, provided deeper insights into the project’s compilation process and the historical development of Chinese classical paintings.
This event has not only enhanced the research resources at the University of Cambridge but has also acted as an important channel for Sino-British cultural exchange, promoting the global spread of China’s rich artistic heritage.
