SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica, Dec. 4, 2024 — Analysis of Costa Rica’s online presence demonstrates significant growth in tourism and exports, according to Bloom Consulting’s 2022-2023 study for esencial COSTA RICA.
Over 12.4 million online searches reveal Costa Rica’s global appeal in tourism, investment, and exports. The country’s commitment to sustainability is also highlighted, particularly regarding renewable energy, carbon neutrality, and sustainable products, reflecting its leadership in climate action and clean technology, aligning with esencial COSTA RICA’s 2035 Strategy to establish Costa Rica as a global sustainability leader.
“This digital footprint analysis provides invaluable insight into global perceptions of Costa Rica and areas of greatest interest. It allows us to refine strategies, showcasing Costa Rica’s value proposition to those seeking authentic, high-quality, sustainable experiences,” said Adriana Acosta, Director of esencial COSTA RICA.
Tourism searches totaled 11 million, making Costa Rica a top global destination. The United States accounts for nearly 50% of these searches, followed by Canada and Germany. Ecotourism, surfing, and luxury tourism remain key, along with sustainable activities like bird watching, hiking, and national park visits.
Beyond tourism, Costa Rica saw an 8% increase in export-related searches. Coffee, flowers, and cocoa are in high demand, with cocoa searches up 20% and coffee searches up 16%. This demonstrates the competitiveness of Costa Rican exports in Europe and North America.
Investment searches increased by 17%, focusing on labor costs, port infrastructure, and clean energy. This shows growing international investor interest in Costa Rica.
A key finding is the strength of Costa Rica’s digital presence. Official sources account for 83% of search results, ensuring online perceptions align with reality.
Government institutions involved in managing the country’s brand play a crucial role, providing reliable, current information on tourism, investment, and exports.
The analysis also shows Costa Rica exceeding pre-pandemic global interest levels, particularly in tourism, with a 42% surge in searches. This growth is fueled by tourism recovery in key markets like the United States and Europe.
“A goal of esencial COSTA RICA’s 2035 Strategy is to establish our country as a global sustainability leader and champion of climate action; this digital footprint study helps us understand consumer perceptions and refine our messaging accordingly,” Acosta concluded.
