Most expats in Shanghai know only the city’s busy downtown. Few have visited the quiet rural areas just 30 kilometers away. A recent cycling event changed that for hundreds of riders.

On June 7, 2026, 300 cyclists joined the Zhuqiao stage of the Shanghai Mass Sports Season. Zhuqiao lies in eastern Pudong, near the city’s international airport. The event offered three routes: 8km for international riders, 17km for families, 25km for challenges. The international loop stopped at a heritage education site, a working farm, and a crayfish-and-rice attraction. Riders like Juan Francisco Padin praised the crayfish fishing and local dishes. A side fair sold local produce and crafts, with lucky draws to draw crowds. The event was co-organized by local sports, foreign affairs, and media groups.

The event linked low-carbon sports to rural economic growth. It let expats experience local agriculture and buy fresh goods directly from farmers. It also helped riders understand China’s national priority of rural revitalization. This model could spread to other rural areas near Chinese megacities.
