MEDIA ADVISORY – Walk to Support Over 322,000 Canadians Living with Crohn’s or Colitis

INTERVIEW & PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES

A Canadian is diagnosed with Crohn’s or colitis every 48 minutes. It’s projected that over 470,000 Canadians will be living with IBD by 2035.

TORONTO, May 30, 2025

WHAT:
On Sunday, June 1, 2025, Crohn’s and Colitis Canada and the Canada’s Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) community will participate in Gutsy Walk. This national fundraising event supports the 322,000+ Canadians affected by Crohn’s or colitis.

Gutsy Walk is Crohn’s and Colitis Canada’s largest fundraising event. The funds raised directly support national research, advocacy efforts, and patient programs.

WHO:
People living with Crohn’s or colitis, community members, their friends and families, and local representatives.

WHEN:
Sunday, June 1, 2025. Event times may vary depending on the location.

WHERE:
More than 30 locations across the country. To register a team, make a donation, or find a location, visit:

WHY:
Currently, there is no cure for Crohn’s or colitis. Treatments are focused on achieving and maintaining remission, reducing complications, preventing lasting damage to the intestines, and improving overall quality of life.

Crohn’s and colitis can be isolating diseases, with stigma and isolation compounding the physical symptoms.

SPOKESPERSON QUOTES:

  • Jayda Sutton of Oakville, ON: A long-time participant living with colitis, and the Ontario Provincial Honourary Chair. “I walk to honour my journey, my son Grayson who passed away at eight months gestation due to complications from my colitis, my daughter Alyssa, my husband Chris, my parents and everyone who has supported me. I want to use my story to highlight the small victories – getting back up when you feel defeated.”
  • Kate Lee, VP, Research & Patient Programs, Crohn’s and Colitis Canada: “Gutsy Walk is a celebration of resilience. Because these diseases can be isolating, Gutsy Walk is an important moment for those affected to come together and contribute to a better future for themselves.”
