March 3-9: Check Your Vehicle’s Recall Status and Get Free Repairs
WASHINGTON, March 3, 2025 – The National Safety Council (NSC) urges all drivers to determine if their vehicles have any outstanding recalls during Vehicle Safety Recalls Week, taking place March 3-9. This national effort aims to protect motorists from potential safety hazards.
Almost 57 million vehicles currently in operation in America – or 1 in 5 – have yet to undergo necessary safety recall repairs. These recalls are issued for significant safety concerns related to vital vehicle components, including airbags, steering mechanisms, and braking systems. The NSC provides a simple way for vehicle operators to ensure their safety and the safety of others by verifying their vehicle’s recall status. Safety experts advise checking for potential recalls during routine maintenance appointments, or at least every three months, due to the frequent issuance of new recalls.
“Ensuring road safety is critical for all who use roadways, and with millions of vehicles operating with unaddressed safety recalls, drivers should confirm their vehicles are safe to drive,” said Lonny Haschel, senior program manager with the Mobility Safety Impact Program at NSC. “The NSC encourages all drivers to check their vehicles for open recalls and have them fixed at no cost as soon as possible. When vehicle safety recalls are addressed, roads become safer for everyone.”
Drivers can easily check if their vehicle is subject to a recall by visiting CheckToProtect.org and entering their license plate number or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), or by uploading an image of either. If a recall affects the vehicle, repairs are available at NO CHARGE at any authorized dealership, regardless of where the vehicle was originally purchased. Any information provided will be used exclusively to identify existing recalls.
