SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden, April 11, 2025Scania announced today that it is acquiring Northvolt Systems Industrial Division. The acquisition includes production resources, a research and development facility, and around 260 employees. The division’s operations are located at a leased production site in Gdańsk, Poland, and an R&D center in Tomteboda, Stockholm, Sweden.

Northvolt Systems Industrial Division is involved in the development and production of battery systems for demanding industries and off-highway applications, offering a range of battery modules and systems used in areas like material handling, construction, and mining. The acquired entity will collaborate with Scania’s Power Solutions business unit, complementing Scania’s existing offerings as part of a varied product line.

With a history spanning over a century in powertrain innovation, Scania Power Solutions has become known for providing dependable and efficient engines that are suitable for tough requirements in the industrial, marine, and power generation sectors. This acquisition will allow Scania to improve its selection of electric solutions for off-road uses.

“Northvolt Systems Industrial Division provides valuable knowledge in battery technology and assembly. Their skills will improve our modular strategy and help us create comprehensive electrified solutions for off-road purposes. I’m happy to welcome the team to Scania,” said Sara Hermansson, Head of Scania Power Solutions.

The acquired business will work alongside Scania Power Solutions and function as an independent entity within Scania Ventures and New Business. This aligns with Scania’s strategy to create related and transformative businesses that enhance Scania’s long-term competitive edge.

“Combining the battery expertise of Northvolt Systems Industrial Division with Scania’s extensive industry knowledge will not only foster innovation but also strengthen our ability to support our customers in their transition efforts. This acquisition shows how Scania Ventures and New Business utilizes its capabilities in opportunity identification, M&A, and managing growth-stage companies to support our core business and strengthen our position as a transformation partner for our customers — all to promote a more sustainable transport ecosystem,” stated Jonas Hernlund, Head of Energy & Infrastructure at Scania Ventures and New Business.

Scania has reached an agreement with the trustee to acquire Northvolt Systems Industrial Division as part of the acquisition process. Both parties have decided not to disclose the purchase price.

“Since 2017, Northvolt Systems Industrial has been creating state-of-the-art battery systems for machinery operating in challenging sectors such as construction, mining, and material handling. Our main solution, Voltpack Core, demonstrates our capacity to overcome real-world industrial challenges. Joining Scania represents the next phase of our development. This acquisition unites two strong histories of electrification and powertrain innovation, and I am confident that, together, we will improve our capabilities and offer even greater value to our customers,” stated Elin Åkerström, Vice President of Northvolt Systems Industrial.

Scania and the trustee have agreed to a deal that ensures operations will continue uninterrupted. Following the acquisition, Northvolt Systems Industrial’s operations will proceed as normal.
