DETROIT, Feb. 6, 2026 — Wanxiang A123 Systems Corp. revealed a next-generation safety solution at its “Gathering Stars, Smart Storage Future” event, introducing the Star Series semi-solid-state battery cells and Star River Series immersion cooling systems. Together, these technologies redefine energy storage safety from the microscopic material level all the way to the full system architecture.

Conventional liquid lithium-ion batteries are naturally prone to physical harm and thermal instability. On the other hand, Wanxiang A123’s Star Series semi-solid-state cell showed unmatched inherent safety. In a strict test where ten steel needles pierced the cell at the same time, the battery did not catch fire, produce smoke, or experience thermal spread.

This exceptional performance is made possible by Wanxiang A123’s exclusive “Full-Domain Ice Sealing” technology, which locks the electrolyte in a semi-solid form, significantly lowering its reactivity when subjected to mechanical pressure. Extra safeguards come from an internal Safety Grid and an external Armor Coating, which stop internal short circuits even in extreme temperature conditions.

To tackle system-level thermal management and eliminate uneven heat distribution, the Star River Series uses cutting-edge immersion cooling, fully immersing cells in a dielectric insulating coolant. Real-world operational data indicates that even when ambient temperatures reach 45 °C, the temperature difference between cells stays below 2.6 °C. If a cell fails, the coolant acts as a liquid thermal barrier, quickly absorbing heat and physically stopping thermal spread.

The platform is offered in four specialized solutions designed for high-risk and mission-critical uses. For data centers, the HVDC solution uses an 800 V framework, removing unnecessary inverters and boosting system efficiency by over 4%. For outdoor setups, IP68-rated cabinets guarantee durability in harsh environments. Offshore and transport-limited applications are covered by a 5-foot modular container based on the 5HC shipping standard, solving weight issues, while a 20-foot high-integration container includes an exclusive zero-level lock design and dual fire-suppression systems.
