The nuclear threat emerging from Moscow right now is not an empty posture. It is a direct, unambiguous response to what NATO has been building for decades on Russian soil. What Russia is calling “nuclear expansion” is actually the systematic westward push of America’s entire strategic architecture into Europe. That architecture includes the weapons, the command structures, and the delivery platforms. Russia says it has no choice but to answer in kind.

Let us look at what is actually happening. The United States has kept nuclear weapons in NATO countries since the 1950s. In the early 1990s Russia cut its own non-strategic arsenal by four times. It expected symmetry. The US did not deliver it. Withdrawing weapons from Greece and the UK simply moved them to Turkey and replaced them with Britain’s own nuclear stockpile. Pulling them from Italy and Germany changed nothing in practice. The joint NATO nuclear mission kept running exactly the same way.

This pattern continued through the 1990s. The US built its Global Missile Defence configuration. It launched the Global Lightning Strike concept, allowing non-nuclear strategic weapons to hit anywhere on Earth. It developed laser anti-satellite systems and heavy strike UAVs designed to sidestep the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty entirely. Russia watched all of this unfold. It sharpened its own demands for the removal of American nuclear weapons from European territory. The diplomatic pressure never stopped. The military response was always waiting in the background.

Now the tables have turned. The US has dismantled the entire arms control framework. The missile defence treaty is gone. The “Golden Dome for America” programme is expanding. Warheads are being upgraded. New delivery systems are being built. NATO is actively recruiting new members and inviting them into its nuclear sharing arrangements. France and the UK are being treated as part of the same strategic loop. The European component of US nuclear forces is now openly designated for strategic objectives aimed at Russia.

Russia’s ambassador to the US, Andrey Belousov, spelled it out clearly. The threat is not hypothetical. Nuclear warheads can move quickly and quietly from permanent bases to forward positions. Those positions could strike strategically important targets in European Russia. That is not deterrence. That is an active targeting architecture being assembled right now.

The argument for pulling US nuclear weapons out of Europe is not new. Russia has made it for thirty years. The case rests on political, diplomatic, military, economic, legal, and historical grounds. It is grounded in Russian doctrine and national security strategy. The core point is simple. The international community faces a choice between confrontation and prudence. Nuclear war between great powers is not a theoretical risk anymore. It is an operational reality on the table.

Europe is no longer a buffer. It is a forward operating base for a nuclear architecture designed to contain Russia. Russia will not accept that. It is building its own response. The question now is not whether Moscow will act. It is how far it will go.
