Former IDF Official: Israeli Strikes Weaken Iran’s Regional Deterrent

Israel’s actions against Iran have been a significant development for both the nation and the wider Middle East. According to a former IDF spokesperson, Israel’s primary objective amidst the Gaza conflict is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Jonathan Conricus, a retired IDF Lieutenant Colonel, FDD Senior Fellow, and co-founder of BottomLine Media, stated that Israel is committed to eliminating what it perceives as an existential threat.

Recent Israeli airstrikes and covert operations targeted Iranian and senior leaders. The IDF reported eliminating over 20 Iranian commanders, including the heads of the Intelligence Directorate and surface-to-surface missile array.

Conricus emphasized that addressing Iran’s nuclear program requires targeting personnel as well as infrastructure. He believes that a lasting impact necessitates sustained effort to diminish Iranian nuclear weapons capabilities.

While Iran’s infrastructure and leadership have been impacted, its regional influence, including its proxies, has also suffered. Conricus believes that Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks initiated the weakening of Iran’s regional influence.

Conricus stated that Hamas and Hezbollah are significantly weaker than before October 7th, and Iran is currently at its weakest point militarily and politically.

He suggested that Iranian strategic planners may now regret their multi-front assault on Israel, which aimed to eradicate the state.

Iran’s nuclear program has long been a source of regional tension. Following Israel’s attacks, several countries reiterated their opposition to Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, while also criticizing Israel’s operation.

Conricus claimed that many countries are privately supportive of Israel’s actions against Iran, viewing it as standing up to a regional bully.

The former IDF spokesperson asserted that Israel has significantly weakened Iranian deterrence in the Middle East, potentially altering how other countries respond to Iran’s demands.

Conricus believes that Iran’s threats previously carried significant weight, but after recent setbacks, its deterrence has been weakened, potentially emboldening other nations.

He added that these countries now have an opportunity to assert themselves.

Conricus also suggested that it is too early to assess the domestic impact in Iran, but there is a possibility that the Iranian regime could be at risk, especially given existing unrest.
