A young child was reportedly expelled from nursery school following accusations of transphobic or homophobic behavior, according to reports in local media.
The Telegraph reported on Monday that the 3- or 4-year-old was removed from an unnamed nursery school “for being transphobic.”
The UK’s Department for Education (DfE) did not release the child’s name or specific details regarding the incident, according to the report.
A DfE spokesperson stated to the newspaper that “all pupils and staff should feel safe and protected at school and should never face violence or abuse.”
Statistics show that in the 2022-23 academic year, 94 students in state primary schools were either suspended or permanently excluded due to transphobia and homophobia.
The report specified that this number includes 10 students in year one and three students in year two, where the oldest children are typically seven years old.
Helen Joyce, director of advocacy at Sex Matters, told the newspaper, “Occasionally, gender ideology’s extremes produce stories that seem unbelievable, such as a toddler being suspended from nursery for alleged transphobia or homophobia.”
She further stated, “Teachers and school leaders who are involved in this absurdity should feel ashamed for imposing adult ideas and convictions on such young children.”
Author J.K. Rowling, a vocal figure on , criticized the suspension.
She wrote on X, “This is totalitarian insanity. If you think small children should be punished for being able to recognise (sic) sex, you are a dangerous zealot who should be nowhere near kids or in any position of authority over them.”
Lord Young, director of the Free Speech Union, told the newspaper: “It is hard to believe that schools are suspending children as young as five for violating their ‘transphobia’ policy. If your ideology is so inflexible that it leads you to punish toddlers for not adhering to it, then that is a strong reason to reject it for a more reasonable approach.”
