SANDVIKEN, Sweden, May 23, 2025 — Alleima’s Kanthal division and Danieli are set to provide a pilot electric process gas heater for installation at Emsteel’s Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) facility in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This heater will electrify a portion of their current heating system. Utilizing Prothal® DH technology, it marks Kanthal’s inaugural electric process gas heater for commercial DRI use, signifying a key advancement in their ongoing development project. The expected delivery date is early 2026.

Emsteel, the UAE’s leading steel and building materials manufacturer, operates an Energiron DRI plant in Abu Dhabi, producing high-quality long products such as heavy sections, bars, and wire rods. The installation of a 1-megawatt electric process gas heater, supplied by Kanthal and Danieli, will further enhance the plant’s environmental performance by reducing emissions.

Kanthal has developed and tested Prothal® DH, and is now collaborating with strategic partner Danieli to prepare it for commercialization. Upon full-scale implementation, this technology has the potential to completely eliminate CO2 emissions from the heating process and improve energy efficiency.

“This pilot represents a significant step in the development and industrialization of large-scale electric process gas heaters for DRI and other ironmaking processes. We are excited to see the technology being applied in a real-world production environment, which will unlock further opportunities for future sales and commercialization,” stated Robert Stål, President of the Kanthal division.

Kanthal and Danieli partnered in 2024 to develop and industrialize full-scale electric process gas heaters for DRI and other ironmaking applications. The heating solution is designed for use with hydrogen, natural gas, and combinations of both, making it suitable for retrofitting existing DRI plants. By integrating this technology into Energiron hydrogen-ready DRI plants, completely emission-free DRI production becomes achievable. Even in natural gas-based DRI plants, electrifying the heating system can result in a CO2 emissions reduction of over 30%.
